Costume design competition - Shakespeare Week 2025

Shakespeare Week 2025 may have ended, but the celebration of all things Shakespeare continues with our fantastic competition! We are asking you to design a costume for your favourite Shakespeare character to reflect their feelings and emotions as well as telling us something about what happens to them in the play.

Our fabulous online exhibition ‘Are ye fantastical…’ shows the different ways some of Shakespeare’s most iconic characters have been represented in the past and is a great starting point to get inspired for your own designs. As part of the exhibition, some amazing illustrators such as Jane Ray, Claire Powell and Shakespeare Week patron Marcia Williams, have created their own costume designs especially for us! They have also shared videos explaining their thought process to help you on your way.

We also have some brilliant resources on our competition pages to help you with your costume design including profiles of characters, colour theory and examples of real Tudor fabric patterns.

The competition has two age categories (4-7 years and 8-11 years) and there is also a prize for the best collective entry from a school. The closing date for entries is 26th May 2025 and you can find full details of how to enter here.

We can’t wait to see your designs!

Good luck!
